Tips For Creating the Perfect Color Scheme in Your Home

Are you considering painting or redecorating one or more rooms in your home? If so, there are several things you need to keep in mind in order to make certain the colors you select are the perfect choice for the room you are painting.

Consider the Largest Pattern

When it comes to selecting the color scheme for the room you are painting or remodeling, it is important to consider the largest pattern in the room. If you have patterned upholstery, for example, the colors you add to your color palette should be the same as those that are found in the upholstery. If you want to paint your walls a neutral color while still coordinating your walls with the rest of the room, look for the whites and beiges found within the room's largest pattern.

Start with the Formal Areas

If you are painting or redecorating the entire home, you should choose a color scheme for the formal areas first and then pull from that color scheme for the remainder of the space. Formal areas include the dining room, the living room and the entryway. For example, if you have a red sofa in your living room, take a toned down variation of this color - such as burgundy - and use that color as an accent in an office, bedroom or den.

Decorate from Dark to Light

An easy way to get a beautiful and professional look every time is to use darker colors for your floor, medium color values for the walls and light colors for the ceiling.

Consider Your Clothing

It may seem strange, but it is also a good idea to consider the colors that you enjoy wearing when selecting colors for your home. If a color looks good on you when you where it, you will look good when you are surrounded by that color in your home. At the same time, if a particular color doesn't look good on you, you likely will not enjoy seeing it every day on your walls either.

Stick with the Color Wheel

The color wheel is a good tool to use when it comes to selecting colors that look good together. Keep in mind that the colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, which are referred to as analogous colors, generally provide a more casual and relaxing look. Therefore, they are a good choice when looking for colors to use in private spaces or in informal areas, such as in the bedroom. Regardless of the color scheme you select, most experts recommend including something black in every room, as black helps to clarify all of the other colors in the room. You don't have to go overboard to get this effect. Even something as simple as a black vase, a black lampshade or a black picture frame can do the trick.

When it comes down to it, the colors you select for the space you are painting or decorating is a reflection of your personal taste and style. By keeping these simple guidelines in mind, you can create the look you like while still ensuring your home looks great to anyone who enters it.
