Interior Design Paint Ideas - Painting Different Wall Colors for Walls That Connect Rooms

When your home has two rooms that share the same wall and you want to paint a different color in each room. What do you do? How do you incorporate two different colors and make it look great? We will look at a 5 simple solutions for this problem.

The first step is to find colors that you love and work well together. You can use virtually any color depending on the colors and style of your decor. If your house is contemporary is would not be out of the realm of possibility to use white on one side and a black on the other. Another option might be using a light gray and a deep gray. If you lean more toward bright bold colors repeat a couple of the colors you have already used in your home one on each side. This is a good option if you just want to simply use paint. A very important tip...make absolutely sure your line dividing the wall colors is completely straight, if it is even slightly crocked you will see it.

Some other options are to actually physically divide the walls with anything from beautiful wood strips that ran from the ceiling to the floor. Then paint your chosen colors on either side. This will give a physical break and can be very effective. Wood is just one option, there are many other things you can use, just be mindful of the decor.

Another interesting option is to use wallpaper on one side of the room and a matching paint color on the other side of the room. I like to cover the raw edge of the wallpaper, many things work here but again a small trip of wood works great. You can paint the separation board or leave it natural, the choice is yours.

Using paint options again you can use stripes of color, example use white and light blue, repeating the pattern white and blue until you get to the area where the rooms meet. At the change of rooms simply change the pattern, now it is light blue and white. Note at the room change you will have a wider stripe of paint that will help distinguish a different room. Using this same idea you can leave the colors the same throughout the wall, but where the rooms change you can change the size of the stripe to indicate a new room. This technique will be more subtle and yet it will give you a break in the wall.

You can do this with any type of painting technique. I suggest you map it out on paper first to get a visual of how it will look, taking into consideration the size of any pattern you want to use. I will often take a picture of the wall blow it up and draw right on the picture. If you are serious you can get computer programs that will help you choose the correct options and colors.

Remember, always take before and after pictures of every project you do. I believe it helps to take the before picture because it gives you a better feel for the space. Our eyes are not always accurate, but the camera is.
